Spelling City

Here is a free spelling  site where you can have fun learning how to spell your own personal spelling words from your homeroom.  Together we will learn how to type in your list of words and quiz yourself.

Spelling City also has a lot of fun games to play using your spelling list.  Some of the top games include: Hang Mouse, Word Search, and Missing Letter.

Arcademic Skill Builders

Arcademic kind of sounds like a blend of two words…academic and arcade doesn’t it? Well, that is no accident. Arcades are known for being filled with exciting games to play.  Arcademic Skill Builders is a site focused on providing you with a fun and fast-paced place to practice your math, language arts, and geography skills.

In class, we will explore the many different games and how to play them.  We will also learn how to create and join private games to use in the lab.

The great thing about this site is that it allows you to choose between single-player mode and multi-player mode.  If you select single player mode you will work in your game in a competitive-free environment. If you select the multi-player mode you will create a private game and compete against your classmates in the computer lab who click to join in your particular game.

Dance Mat Typing

Why do we learn to type?

Because typing with one or two fingers is slow and you will never get your work finished.   Typing is a skill and when you learn to do it well, typing is often faster than writing.  In the lab, we will learn how to type correctly. Hunting and pecking for the keys you need will be a thing of the past.  Your fingers will learn to stay on the homerow and take adventures from there.    We will begin most classes with 10 minutes of keyboarding in grades 3-5.

Dance Mat is a fun site we will visit in class when we want to take a break from our usual typing software Type to Learn 3 & Type to Learn 4.  It is also a site that you could use at home to help you with your skills.

Some important reminders when typing:

  • Use the correct fingers.
  • Take your time. Focus on accuracy not speed.
  • Be sure to rest your wrists on the table.
  • Sit up straight.
  • Look at the screen when you are typing  not  your hands.  In the lab, we will use speed skins to cover the keyboard so you won’t be tempted.

Brain POP Jr.

We will be using BrainPOP Jr  in the lab again this school year.  Do you remember the username and password?  You will find both of these listed on the board.  Look at the smartboard to see which movie you are assigned to watch.  Be sure to plug in your headphones  and zoom the assigned movie to full screen. When you finish watching the movie follow the directions that were given at the beginning of class.  Sometimes we will play the games and activities. Other times we will take the easy quizzes and hard quizzes.  If you are instructed to print your quiz please type your first name, last name, and section.

Enjoy the show with Annie & Moby.
